Porter-C 7336 r-o, vs, sander
Just picked up a used 7336 sander. Used to have one that I built 13 boats with. Like the tool. Has no pads. I can switch the counter weight to go with 5" pads, since I already have a finish sander that uses the 5" discs. Got me to thinking what the advantages are to a 5" sanding disc and the 6". Also, Where can I get a repair or maintenance manual, If it wouldn't take special tools to grease, replace bearings, etc.

Hi rprager,
You certainly can switch your 7336 to use 5" discs. Like you mentioned you will need to replace the counterweight. The counterweight for a 5" pad is part #874011. There are several different pads availble to use depending on whether you are using hook & loop or PSA paper. You can find all of these options on the parts breakdown for the 7335 sander.
The only advantage to a 6" sander is the amount of area it sands. The larger pad allows you to sand a larger area faster. Most consider a 5" sander more of a general purpose sander. The 6" machines are usually used when there is lots of large, flat work to be done.
I have never seen a service manual for these sanders. Most power tools don't give much more than a parts breakdown for repair reference. There really isn't too much to be concerned with on one of these workhorses. You shouldn't need to worry about lubrication unless you where to replace gears. The bearings are all sealed. Just check your brushes every now and then and blow the machine off with compressed air frequently and you should have years of trouble free use.
I hope this answers your questions!
