I have a 7" 'grinder I put a sanding pad on. I used it for several years and now I want to change it over to a new grinder I just got. The issue is I can't get it to break free from the arbor. It is a very good backer with a heavy alluminum backing frame/wheel with integral cooling ports and a rigged face. I realy hate to chuck this out with the grinder when it is in so good of shape and it cost a small fortune to replace it. Any sugestions on how to get this thing off the spindle?

I can't visualize the exact geometry of your situation. Does the plate have a hole all the way through it so you can see the end of the arbor? Anyway, I suggest you think about it as a automotive problem. If it is an aluminum plate, heating it with a torch might expand it enough so it will come off.
Other ideas: Apply penetrating oil and let it sit for at least a day. Then think about using an automotive tool like a puller or an impact tool (if you can angle one behind it to hammer it outward). Maybe the sturdy fork that they use to separate ball joints could be used to pry it off. |
