Default Makita ls1013 Miter saw blade keeps running

Has anyone expereienced this problem with their Makita Compound Slider? The electric brake is not working like it has, The blade continues to run for several seconds after you let up on the switch. I bought new brushes from eReplacementsParts.com thinking that might be the issue but the symptoms are the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

Default Blade Brake Failure on LS1013

The brushes would have been the first thing I would have suggested. If that didn't do the trick, here is another idea.

You might want to try cleaning the commutator on the armature. I am not sure how tough it is to get access to on the LS1013.

Here is a picture of a typical armature and commutator:

The electric brake on the LS1013 operates by reversing the polarity for a short time on the motor as soon as you let go of the switch. So the connection between the brushes and the commutator must be working for the brake to be working.

How well is the saw running normally? Any loss of power or intermittent performance? One symptom of a bad connection between the brushes and the commutator is high arcing at the brushes. Sometimes the saw will run forward OK, but braking will still be problematic. Also, if you just barely replaced the brushes keep in mind that you may have to run the saw for a little bit to seat the brushes.

What happens when you let go of the switch? Is there any evidence of braking at all (just not enough to stop quickly), or does the blade run without any braking?

The only other thing I would mention is that if there is no braking effect at all, then it might be a problem with the electrical components of the saw not reversing the polarity after the switch is let go.
Keep us posted how it is going.

Default Similiar problem with DeWalt DW705

I have a similar problem with a DeWalt 705 Type 8 miter saw. Could the cause be the same?

During the two years in our shop we have had the brushes and the switch replaced twice.

Appreciate your thoughts.

James,

This could be the problem. The DW705 uses the same mechanism to stop the blade. When you let go of the switch, the polarity is reversed which causes the blade to stop. As a rule, if the blade brake goes bad check the brushes first because they are cheap and easy to fix. As suggested above, check the armature to makes sure it looks clean and is getting a good connection.

If those both look good, it might be something that a professional should look at.

I'll take a look over the weekend and let you know.

Thanks for the feedback.

Default Brake not working on Dewalt

Worked on two 705 & 708 Dewalts at work. Both had the lack of braking. 705 worked after replacing the switch. The other had the switch replaced, new field winding and new brushes and brush holders and it still wouldn't stop like it should. Company rep said she didn't know what else it could be. Me either!!
