    Default DeWalt hammer drill "skipping"

I have a DeWalt model DC988 heavy duty xrp 18v hammer drill. When drilling, it tends to "clutch out" or skip, as if perhaps a gear is missing a tooth (or several teeth). I have a few questions:

    1) What might be causing this?

    2) Is it something I can fix myself? If so, is there a repair manual available somewhere?

    3) If it is something left to a repair shop, where should I send it?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Steve Bohne

    Hi sbohne,

It sounds to me like the transmission is on its way out. It is an easy repair to make. We have an article that will walk you through the repair. You can find the article at the following link...

Removing And Replacing DeWALT Drill Transmissions

The new transmission is part #397892-05

Let us know how it turns out!
