    Default DW988 Smoking gun

Hi. New to the forum. I've got a dewalt988 that has started to smoke a little bit and put out a burned smell with just about any usage. I'm new to this game so just looking for a little advice. Would it be just the brushes? Its about 3 years old and has been used by a homeowner with what I would call "medium" duty usage.

I'd say take the drill apart and clean it up inside and put new brushes in it would probably fix it. Don't forget to clean up the part of the armature that the brushes contact. I usually use some kind of real fine emory cloth for this or something like #600 sandpaper and then really clean that part of the armature up afterward so as not to leave any sand in it off of the sandpaper.
