Default Bosch 1005VSR no longer variable speed

I've got a Bosch 1005VSR drill that I smoked (literally). It no longer has the variable in the variable speed drive. It only has one speed - high. So as I pull back the trigger, it doesn't engage until almost fully pulled and then goes high. Do I need a new ON/OFF switch?

var switches have a diode in them. when a switch smokes it is the diode. you have to replace the switch.

if the smoke was from the brushes or armature then it could be a different problem,
