It is very difficult to stretch the belt onto the pulleys so I put the new belt in hot water for a few minutes and it went right on.

I agree with Rod on belt replacement. After struggling, I found that any kind of heat, water, sunlight and a little stretching with the fingers after can help. But...start the belt halfway on the motor pulley, then (it just wont slip on) start the belt on the upper shaft. Rotate the belt, you may need an extra hand to put pressure on the belt of the motor shaft. While turning the shafts kind of twist the belt till it goes on both shafts. This may take some finger pinching but keep working till the belt engages the grooves. keep turning and twisting the belt. It worked for me. Work it all the way till you only see the last non grooved part of the pulleys. Then go ahead and do the same for the second belt. New belts are very rigid and a little heat and stretching makes it easier. Good luck
