My Makita 2040 no longer seems to feed well. I have to push boards through with great difficulty. What do I need to do to correct this and have the machine operate as it used to?

The rollers are disintegrating they need to be replaced.
Check the bearings on the feed rollers, esp on the driven side. I'll bet you'll find one or more pretty worn and likely the bearing surface on the roller is shot, too.
