    Hi storckman,
In most cases when they make the conversion from a 4 pole to two pole switch they just connect the two common wires and then wire the line wire into the switch using two poles to close circuit.
Take a continuity meter and check the following:
    1. continuity of both leads on the cord.
    2. continuity across switch.
    3. continuity across one brush to the other.(This check continuity across armature).
    4. Take brushes out and check continuity from motor leads to brush tubes.(This will check for any breaks in the field.Hope this helps.Good luck.
