Default DeWalt DW988 18V: Fried Motor?

As mentioned in the title, DW988 18V 3 speed hammer drill. I put a battery in it and when I squeezed the trigger sparks came out of the vent holes and then smoke.

I immediately stopped and removed the battery. The drill did turn and work, but there was obviously a problem.

Is this the sign of a fried motor or do I only need new brushes?

    Thanks in advance.

hello! start by checking the brush and holder assembly check the connection lead at the brush holder these types have a tendency to burn out the connector tab on the brush holder. if all those parts are good then i'm sad to say yo need a new motor. good luck!
