    Default DeWalt DW618 router repair

After few months of use, it started acring severely between brushes and armature and variable speed didn't work--ran about 8,000 RPM. Replaced brushes. Same problem. Replaced electronic speed control. Same problem. Then noticed the "Magnet Ring" was broken (at top or armature). Don't know what that part does. I dug out broken pieces and tried running it again. Same problem. Will a new magnet ring fix this thing, or is my armature possibly bad. The magnet ring is only a couple of bucks. An armature is around $60. Do you pull the bearing at the top of the router to replace the magnet ring?

    Default magnet ring

    Hey charliemac,
the magnet ring keeps the speed more consistent under load along with the speed controller..not sure how it would run without it..[if it would cause excessive sparking]..it is possible that the broken pieces have damaged the armature and that is why the sparking..check the armature for nicks or actual cut wires.. if it looks ok and there isn't any unusual discolorations around the commutator..[purple or red bars]..you can try the magnet ring and then go from there...
    hope this helps..
