Delta 36-220
I also own a delta 36-220 Type III and the blade guard broke yesterday... I have been searching and searching for a replacement and delta does not make a replacement part. I clicked on tool info and found 4 reviews the same as my problem... Do not buy a delta miter saw... I am very disappointed with the craftsmanship of this power tool...

I see I'm not alone with the broken blade guard. However! Some of you are describing a problem I fixed with JB Weld a while back. The little nubs that are driven by the keyed 'washer' from the metal arm cracked out and I JB Welded the whole drive wheel washer to the guard. Something to consider for those that may be able to fix that. Unfortunately, I put several stress cracks in my guard when I tried to saw it and it didn't retract. Then later I tripped and stumbled and kicked my blade guard causing it to shatter in half. I believe I will conclude my searching based on all of your posts... And see if Porter Cable or someone makes chop saws! I'm very happy with my PC circular saw and it's robust quality. In the meanwhile I'll keep using it with safety glasses and a keen eye to the location of my fingers. (Please spare me from the safety comments!)

When the blade guard broke on my saw, it was right where it attaches to the slide arm. I cut a piece if 1/16th aluminum and fastened it together with that. So far, it has held through about a thousand cuts. A friend heated the break on his saw and melted another piece of plastic to it. After smoothing it out with a wood rasp, it seems to be holding at least temporarily.

Just picked up a Delta Model 36-220 10" compound miter saw off Craig's list for $40. The cabinet shop threw it out because the lower blade guard (plastic) was broken, with no replacement. This created a potential safety issue for the assembly-line employees. It is an older saw, and is in excellent condition otherwise.
Keeping my fingers away from the blade while cutting like my daddy taught me, I plan to fashion a lower blade guard from plexiglass sheet to replace the broken original.
Delta should make available replacements for the safety features 'til the cows come home. It would make good customer relations, and keep a lot of good Delta saws in service.
